About College of Health Technology, Calabar

The College of Health Technology, Calabar, started as Institute of Public Health in the later part of 1970, using the Diamond Health Centre, Diamond Hill, Calabar as its temporary site. During this period, twenty one (21) School Health Attendants and five (5) Community Nursing Students were admitted for training. Early in 1971, the Institute moved to No. 2 Hawkins Road, Calabar , yet another temporary accommodation. Other cadres of Health personnel trained by the School were Rural Health Assistants and Leprosy Attendants. The College moved to its permanent site at Mary Slessor Avenue, Calabar in 1975.

In 1976, the names of the Institution was changed to School of Health Technology following its approval by the Federal Ministry of Health. In the same year, the first batch of Public Health Nurses, direct intake of Community Midwives, Rural Health Superintendents, Public Health Superintendents (now Junior Community Health Extension Workers (JCHEWs)), Medical Records Assistants and Assistant Medical Records Officers were trained.

In 1985, the National Certificate in Health Records and Vital Statistics Program was introduced.

Other programs subsequently introduced were: Direct COmmunity Health Officers, Community Health Supervisors, Health Information Management Technicians, Senior Community Health Extension Workers (SCHEWs), Medical Laboratory Assistants/Technicians, Pharmacy Technicians and Radiography Technicians.

In 1999, the College was granted provisional approval by National Board for Technical Education (NBTE) to run Public Health Nursing (PHN) and Environmental Health (EH) Programs at HND level.

On November 6, 2201, the Cross River State College of Health Technology, Calabar Law was assented to by His Excellency Mr. Donald Duke, the then Governor of Cross River State.

In 2002, the then Principal of the School, Mrs Ako A. B. Adam was appointed Acting Provost of the Institution, following its Collegiate Status as conferred by the Law.

In August 2005, the Second Governing Council was inaugurated with Dr. Mike Nkwam as the Chairman and Dr. Franklin Ani as the substantive Provost.

In 2006, the General Studies Department was created to take care of service courses as required by National Board for Technical Education (NBTE).

By 2007, other Principal Officers of the College, the Registrar, the Librarian and the Bursar assumed duty.

In 2011, NBTE granted full accreditation for HND Public Health Nursing and Provisional accreditation to run the National Diploma in Health Information Management, Environmental Health and Community Health Programs.

In 2013, a Centre for Entrepreneurial Studies (CES) was established as a mandatory accreditation requirement by NBTE. In the same year, NBTE then granted the College full accreditation to run HND in Environmental Health and Health Information Management Programs.

In 2014, the College introduced Dispensing Opticianry Program and re-introduced the Radiography Technicians Program.

The staff strength of the College has also grown for both Academic and Non-Academic staff complementary to the College expansions.

b. National Diploma or its equivalent in Nursing.
c. Holders of the above must possess the basic O’level credits in English, Mathematics, Biology, Chemistry and Physics.
HND IN PUBLIC HEALTH NURSING (WAHEB)
2a. ENVIRONMENTAL HEALTH OFFICER (ND) TWO (2)/FOUR (4) YEARS Minimum entry requirement into National Diploma (ND) in Environmental Health Science Programme is five (5) O’level credits in English Language, Mathematics, Chemistry, Physics and Biology or Health Science in either WAEC/NECO at not more than two sittings. Candidates with JAMB score of 150 and above have added advantage. ND, HND IN ENVIRONMENTAL HEALTH TECHNOLOGY (WAHEB)
2b. ENVIRONMENTAL HEALTH TECHNICIAN THREE (3) YEARS Minimum of 5 passees in O’level WASSC/SSCE/GCE/NECO at not more than 2 sittings. Three (3) of the passes must be at at credit level and should include English Language, Biology or Health Science, Geography, Physics, Chemistry, Agricultural Science, Technical Drawing and any other subject. ENVIRONMENTAL HEALTH TECHNICIAN DIPLOMA (WAHEB)
2c. ENVIRONMENTAL HEALTH ASSISTANTS TWO (2) YEARS Four (4) O’level passes which should include at least one science subject (Biology, Chemistry, Health Science, Nutrition, Physics). A pass in English Language will be an added advantage. CERTIFICATE
2d. HEALTH PROMOTION AND EDUCATION THREE (3) YEARS Four (4) credits in SSCE, NECO, GCE or Teachers Grade II to include English Language, Mathematics, Biology/Health Science and any other subject. HPE DIPLOMA
3a. COMMUNITY HEALTH EXTENSION WORKER (CHEW) THREE (3) YEARS Five (5) Credit level passes at WASSC/SSCE/GCE/NECO O’level not more than two (2) sittings.
These must include:
English Language, Mathematics, Physics, Chemistry and Biology/Health Science. Also, candidates with JCHEW certificates have an added advantage.

3b. JUNIOR COMMUNITY HEALTH EXTENSION WORKER (JCHEW) TWO (2) YEARS Three (3) credits and two (2) passes at O’level WASSC or NECO in not more than two sittings to include English Language, Mathematics, Biology/Health Science and any other two subjects. CERTIFICATE IN JUNIOR COMMUNITY HEALTH (NCHPBC)
4a. PROFESSIONAL DIPLOMA IN HEALTH INFORMATION MGT THREE (3) YEARS Five credits in O’level at not more than two sittings at the SSCE/WASSC or its equivalent. The subjects must include: English Language, Mathematics, Biology or Health Science, Physics or Chemistry and any other subject. DIPLOMA IN HEALTH INFORMATION MANAGEMENT (HRORBN)
4b. ND HEALTH INFORMATION MANAGEMENT TWO (2) YEARS Five (5) O’level credits in English Language, Mathematics, Chemistry, Physics and Biology or Health Science in either WAEC/NECO at not more than two sittings. Only candidates with JAMB score of 150 and above are eligible. NATIONAL DIPLOMA IN HEALTH INFORMATION MANAGEMENT
4c. HND HEALTH INFORMATION MANAGEMENT TWO (2) YEARS National Diploma (ND) in H.I.M with a minimum of lower credit. Health Record Technician Certificate with a minimum of lower credit and five (5) O’level credits in English Language, Mathematics, Chemistry, Physics and Biology or Health Science in either WAEC/NECO at not more than two sittings. Candidates must have completed one year industrial attachment. Those with ND with initial JAMB score of 150 are not required to write JAMB. However, candidates without ND certificates are required to have a JAMB score of 160 and above. HIGHER NATIONAL DIPLOMA IN HEALTH INFORMATION MANAGEMENT
5. PHARMACY TECHNICIAN THREE (3) YEARS Five (5) credits at not more than two (2) sittings in WASSC/SSCE/GCE/NECO in the following subjects:
English Language, Mathematics, Physics, Chemistry and Biology.
PHARMACY TECHNICIAN CERTIFICATE.
6. MEDICAL LABORATORY TECHNICIAN THREE (3) YEARS Requires WASSC/SSCE/GCE/NECO – Four credit passes in the following subjects:
English Language, Mathematics, Biology and Chemistry with at least a pass in Physics. (Results more than ten years as the date of this registration will be rejected by the Registration Board). Holders of Medical Lab. Assistant certificate with the above O’level.

7. DISPENSING OPTICIANRY THREE (3) YEARS Four (4) credit passes at not more than two (2) sittings in WASSC/SSCE/GCE/NECO in the following subjects:
English Language, Mathematics, Biology, Chemistry and Physics with a minimum of pass in English Language or Mathematics. A candidate with a minimum of 10 years cognate experience in optical dispensing (apprenticeship), who has two or three credits in any of these subjects may also be considered for admission.

8. COMPUTER SCIENCE TWO (2) YEARS Four credit level passes in WASSC/SSCE/GCE/NECO at not more than two sittings. The four subjects must include Mathematics, Physics, English Language and any other subject. JAMB score of 150 and above (JAMB subjects are English Language, Mathematics, Physics and Chemistry).
Candidates with a pass in Computer Foundation Examination (CFE) of the Computer Professionals Registration Council of Nigeria (CPN) are also accepted. Such candidates must also have credit passes in the required O’level subjects.
NATIONAL DIPLOMA IN COMPUTER SCIENCE
9. RDIOGRAPHY (MEDICAL IMAGING PROCESSING TECHNICIAN) THREE (3) YEARS Five (5) credit passes at not more than two (2) sittings in WASSC/SSCE/GCE/NECO in the following subjects:
English Language, Mathematics plus either Physics, Chemistry or Biology and any other two (2) subjects.
Professional qualification:
Holder of Certificate in Medical Dark Room Practice (Dark Room Asst. Certificate) plus the above stated requirements will require two (2) years traning for Medical Dark Room Technician Programme.

Admission into the college of health technology, Calabar

 

Admission into the College of Health Technology, Calabar usually commences around March of each year. The process begins when the Academic Planning Unit of the College publishes an advert calling for applications from suitably qualified candidates for admission into any course that they meet the entry requirements. Interested candidates submit their applications using an electronic platform (e-Application). Community Health, Medical Laboratory and Pharmacy are among the most sought after departments in the college.

The application process runs for about three months after which an entrance aptitude test is written sometime in June. Candidates applying for admission into NBTE courses are exempted from writing the entrance exam. Successful candidates at the entrance exam then proceed to the next stage which is a written interview and inspection of credentials. Candidates who pass the interview are then offered admission into the college. Also, candidates applying for admission into NBTE courses who meet the JAMB cut off mark are also offered admission. It is important to note that candidates coming into the college through JAMB can apply for admission up till September.

Candidates who are unsuccessful at the interview stage but who passed the entrance exam, can apply for supplementary admission into other programmes provided there is vacancy in that department.

Admission into College of Health Technology, Calabar is a very competitive and transparent process. Prospective students must study hard in order to gain admission into the college. The college also adheres strictly to its admission quota as provided by the respective regulatory boards and NBTE.

Minimum entry requirement into National Diploma (ND) in the College of Health Technology, Calabar.  is five (5) O’level credits in English Language, Mathematics, Chemistry, Physics and Biology or Health Science in either WAEC/NECO at not more than two sittings.
