Studying and retaining is such an intriguing subject.

While studying is one thing, Retaining on the other hand is another wide concept on it own.

Many spends hours studying and seems to have no problem with that, the problem is remembering what they read.

Your overall mental attitude towards studying will go a long way to show what you will get from it if you see studying as mundane, or as a task, chances are that you won’t always have a successful study session.

As it were, Studying is not one of our innate qualities, so developing one calls for some effort, consistency, and a right mental attitude. Believe in yourself that you can make it work through.


Picking up a book at just about any random time of the day doesn’t really help, remember the goal is not just to study but to retain as well. so why not sit down and review your schedule and check when you are always free during the day or when you can squeeze out a regular free time for yourself and make that your study time session.

It also important to note though, that any potential time of study should be one when you are naturally more receptive and your cognitive power is at its peak, probably in the morning, midnight or something.


Studying without a clear objective is like setting out on a journey without a destination. Before you start each study session, determine what you hope to achieve at the end of the session, them streamline your session to achieving it.

Remember it is not how many materials you covered but how well you understood whatever amount you studied.

Also, try to be realistic with your objectives, know your limits and let that influence your objectives, otherwise, studying will just be an uphill battle


Distraction can take various forms, from the subtle sounds from the environment to the constant buzz of your smartphone along with the urge to check it out,  to the sight of a massive butt passing by,  all can be a distraction posing a threat to your study session.

Simply put basically, distraction(in this context) can be anything(even thought) that tends to drift your mind away from what you are studying.

Realizing how harmful distractions can be, makes it important to do away with them by keeping your study area distraction-free, how?

  • Choose a relatively quiet area for your study session
  • Remove any gadget eg. Smartphone, that can cause distraction off your study area or put them in silent mode
  • Be focused on your study

At intervals of your study, take a couple of minutes or so, to meditate on what you are studying or at the end of your study session.
